Readers consult the document instead of collecting it
With the PDF macro the document renders on the Confluence page - paged, searchable, zoomable - so your readers consult a specification or a report without saving it, finding it and opening another app. You point them at the clause, and they land on it.
You cite the clause, and readers land on it
Set the page the document opens on and the macro becomes a citation rather than a filing cabinet: the clause you are discussing is the first thing a reader sees. For long documents the thumbnail sidebar turns a hundred pages into something they skim by eye.
Readers search inside it without leaving your page
The viewer brings its own toolbar - find a term across the whole document, zoom to read the small print, print just what is needed. Questions that used to mean opening a desktop reader get answered where they were asked.

A contract that needs room gets it; a one-page appendix does not take over the page. Set the height, or leave the toolbar off entirely for a clean inline preview where the document is illustration rather than reference material.

The PDF viewers for Confluence take the document one of two ways: attach it to the page, or paste a URL to it. Fine for a one-off. Less fine when the document is the current release of a standard your team keeps in an S3 bucket, in Google Drive or behind SFTP - then somebody downloads and re-attaches it each time it is reissued, and the pages that were not updated quietly show last year's version. This macro reads from those places through a connection an admin sets up once, and every page pointing at the file moves forward together.
